This online debate held by the Economist features a guest opinion by CEPR Co-Director Dean Baker on Tuesday, April 14th.  The two main debators are Professor Thomas Piketty (arguing in favor of higher taxes for the rich) and Chris Edwards of the CATO Institute (arguing against).  Other guest experts will also share their opinions.

Employee Free Choice Act Debate

On Wednesday, April 8, from 11am to 1pm, the Alaska AFL-CIO and Alaska Chamber of Commerce held a forum to debate the Employee Free Choice Act at the Captain Cook Hotel in Anchorage, AK.

Carl Shepro, a Professor of Political Science at the University of Alaska at Anchorage, moderated the event.  Vince Beltrami, President of the Alaska AFL-CIO, and CEPR Senior Economist John Schmitt argued in favor of the Employee Free Choice Act.  Marc Freedman, a representative of the US Chamber of Commerce, and Rebecca Logan, President of the Alaska Association of Builders and Contractors, spoke against the Employee Free Choice Act.

This event was sponsored by the Oldenborg Center for Modern Languages and International Relations at Pomona, looked at the prospects for change in U.S. foreign and economic policy toward the region under the Obama Administration. Working for an Economy by the People, for the People!

Hosted by Building Bridges Radio (WBAI, 99.5 FM NY) and featuring CEPR Co-Director Dean Baker, this event was an examination of the present crisis of capitalism and peoples’ demands that the road to economic recovery lies in directly increasing their living standard and abandoning trickle down economics. In the words of Rev. Martin Luther King Jr. who gave his life fighting for the rights of the Memphis sanitation workers and for a poor people’s movement for economic rights, “A true revolution of values will soon look uneasily on the glaring contrast of poverty and wealth…and say: `This is not just.'"
