The NYT told readers that: “Toyota also agreed to pay a $16.4 billion fine, one of the heaviest fines imposed on a car manufacturer in the United States, for concealing information related to the recall.” The actual fine was $16.4 million. This is equal to approximately 0.1 percent of Toyota’s profits in a normal year.
