CEPR has called attention to numerous international economic problems that are now widely recognized. For example, the World Bank recently pointed out the risks to developing countries of holding dollar reserves (“Poor nations with big dollar reserves risk great losses, World Bank warns,” Financial Times, April 7, 2005). CEPR calculated these potential losses in September 2004 in its report, “Going Down With the Dollar The Cost to Developing Countries of a Declining Dollar.” CEPR was also the first think tank to call attention to the sharp slowdown in growth in most developing countries over the last 25 years. This is now becoming a major political issue, especially in Latin America.
Experts
MARK WEISBROT is Co-Director of the Center for Economic and Policy Research. He received his Ph.D. in economics from the University of Michigan. Weisbrot has written numerous research papers on international and domestic economic policy, including; international trade and finance; macroeconomic policy; debt and development; and democracy. He is co-author, with Dean Baker, of “The Scorecard on Globalization Twenty Years of Diminished Progress.” He writes a weekly column on economic and policy issues distributed to over 550 newspapers by Knight-Ridder/Tribune Information Services. He appears regularly on television and radio programs, including ABC World News Tonight, CNN and Fox News.
DEAN BAKER is Co-Director of the Center for Economic and Policy Research. He received his Ph.D. in economics from the University of Michigan. Baker is author of the Economic Reporting Review, a weekly examination of the economic reporting in the New York Times and the Washington Post, and periodic analyses of the Federal Government’s economic data on prices, employment, corporate profits, and the GDP. He is co-author, with Mark Weisbrot, of “Social Security The Phony Crisis.” Other works include “Getting Prices Right The Battle Over the Consumer Price Index” and “Globalization and Progressive Economic Policy,” edited with Jerry Epstein and Bob Pollin. Baker’s writing has appeared in the Atlantic Monthly, Washington Post, and American Prospect, among other publications. He appears regularly on television and radio programs, including CNN, NPR, Newshour with Jim Lehrer and Counterspin.
