Asian Pacific American Labor Alliance
As part of the Asian Pacific American Labor Alliance 2011 Convention, which took place July 21-24, CEPR's Director of Domestic Policy, Nicole Woo, took part in a presentation titled "Fighting for Recognition: The Diversity of the AAPI Workforce Today." Looking at Census Bureau microdata sets, the presentation highlighted demographic analyses and detailed snapshots of the rise of the AAPI workforce over the past decades, the vast diversity of the AAPI population, and challenges faced by AAPI workers. The findings counter the "model minority" myth and demonstrate that, to truly understand the state of AAPI workers, one must look beyond the aggregate numbers. With this data, organizations can equip themselves to fight for recognition from policy makers, stakeholders, and other key players about the need to address the issues of the AAPI working community. Lucia Lin of the UCLA Institute for Research on Labor and Employment also took part in the presentation.
