Washington, D.C. – It’s been a dozen years since the Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) last released results of their survey on contingent and alternative work. On June 7, there will be a new release, but the most anticipated component of the survey, the measure of gig work, will not be released at this time. What is important to look for on Thursday? CEPR offers a detailed preview online, and this handy checklist:
• Even though the BLS is not yet releasing data on gig workers, look for changes in “self-employed, unincorporated” — gig workers are a subset of this group.
• Has the share of independent contractors increased?
• Has the share of contract workers increased?
• Has the gender of temp workers changed?
