CEPR expert Ivana Vasic Lalovic’s presentation, Tinkering with a Broken Policy: The IMF’s 2024 Surcharge Reform, offers a deeper analysis of the recent reforms.
On December 16th, the MENA Fem Movement for Economic, Development and Ecological Justice in cooperation with the Center for Economic and Policy Research (CEPR) and the Bretton Woods Project presented the end of year webinar titled #StopIMFSurcharges: The Path Ahead.
For four years, the #StopIMFSurcharges movement has called for the IMF to discontinue its regressive surcharge policy — onerous fees imposed on heavily indebted countries like Argentina, Ecuador, Pakistan, Egypt, and Ukraine. In October 2024, after years of advocacy, the IMF announced a package of reforms intended to address these concerns. But are they enough?
In this webinar we aim to try and answer questions like; what are the impacts of the IMF’s recent reforms to the policy? How has the movement pushed for these reforms? And what is the path ahead for the movement to end these damaging and counterproductive fees once and for all?
