Washington, DC —This Labor Day, CEPR focuses on a federal agency that verifies our workplaces are safe, the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA).
As Data Analyst Matt Sedlar explains in today’s Blue Collar Jobs Tracker, the agency charged with ensuring “safe and healthful working conditions” has been scaled back. In fact, a recent AFL-CIO report found “the number of inspectors has reached its lowest level since the early 1970s.”
While the reported number of serious workplace safety violations has fallen, that might be due to the fact that the number of compliance officers, who conduct inspections, has been on a steady decline for decades.
