Washington DC — Manufacturing employment, which has seen steady growth over the last 12 months, fell by 3,000 jobs, nationally in August, according to a new analysis by the Center for Economic and Policy Research (CEPR). Kentucky experienced the largest drop-off, shedding 2,300 jobs or 0.9 percent of its manufacturing employment. Indiana, Ohio, and Missouri also lost 2,000, 1,800, and 1,500 manufacturing jobs, respectively.
Nationally, aggregate employment in the blue collar sectors of manufacturing, construction, mining and logging, grew by 26,000 in August, an increase of 0.1 percent compared with July. The bulk of those new jobs, 23,000, were in construction. Kentucky bucked the national trend, losing 1,400 construction jobs last month, a decline of 1.8 percent compared with July.
