The Republican Budget Bill: Take from the Poor, Give to the Rich
Article • Expose the Heist: Power and Policy in Unprecedented Times
The Congressional Budget Office has put numbers to the ugly facts behind the One Big Beautiful Bill Act. If passed by the Senate, the Act will, on average, reduce the income of the poorest households by over $1,500 and increase the income of the richest households — those making over $500,000 — by over $12,000 (Figure).
What does an additional $12,000 mean to the richest households? Not much. There is nothing that they can’t already buy that is dependent on an additional $12,000.
What would an additional $12,000 mean to the poorest households? A lot. It would prevent families from being hungry and from being evicted. It would allow some households to be able to buy a car or get a roof fixed. It would get households out of debt and out of poverty.
Budgets are moral documents. Rather than help people in poverty, the Republicans in Congress have decided to hurt them. This bill is obscene.
